Creating custom data sets in widgets

This guide explains how to create custom data sets and add them to your widgets.

Introduction

Create custom data sets to visualize custom data in your widget in addition to the data fetched from your datastreams. Use custom data sets to achieve the following goals:

  • Add a metric and assign it a value.

  • Add a metric and dimension and assign them a value.

  • Add a target value or a benchmark. This lets you display a horizontal line in your widget so that you can visually compare all data in the widget against a target value or a benchmark.

Prerequisites

Before you complete the procedure in this guide, perform all of the following actions:

Procedure

To add a target value or benchmark to your widget, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Explore page.

  2. At the top of the page, select the View tab that contains the widget.

  3. Select a data set from the data table.

You can only create a custom data set if you have already selected at least one data set.

  4. Below the data table, in the Data sets section of the page, click + Add custom.

To create a dimension and metric, continue to step 5. To only create a new metric, skip to step 6.

  5. Enable the Dimension toggle, then follow these steps.

    1. Choose how you want to create your custom dimension:

      • Choose Select to choose an existing dimension and assign a value to it. In the Select dimension drop-down menu, select the existing dimension you want to use.

      • Choose Create to create a new dimension and assign a value to it. In the Create dimension field, enter a name for the new dimension.

    2. In the Value field, enter the value for your new dimension.

  6. Choose how you want to create your custom metric:

    • Choose Select to choose an existing metric and assign a value to it. In the Select metric drop-down menu, select the existing metric you want to use.

    • Choose Create to create a new metric and assign a value to it. In the Create metric field, enter a name for the new metric.

  7. In the Format field, select the format for your new metric.

  8. In the Fractional digits field, select how many decimal places this metric should use.

  9. In the Value field, enter the value for your new metric.

  10. Click Create.

As a result, you have added a custom data set containing a new metric and, if selected, a new dimension to your widget.
