Creating a Sankey diagram to visualize duration data

This guide explains how to create a Sankey diagram in Explore in order to visualize duration data.

Introduction

The duration data type allows you to collect and display duration data. For more information about duration data in general, see Working with duration data.

Prerequisites

Before you complete the procedure in this guide, perform all of the following actions:

Displaying duration data in a Sankey diagram

To create a Sankey diagram that displays values for duration data metrics, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Explore page.

  2. Next to the View tabs at the top of the page, click Create new view.

  3. In the Dimensions & Metrics list on the left, select at least two dimensions to add to your Sankey diagram.

  4. In the Dimensions & Metrics list on the left, select your duration data metric.

  5. In the Metrics section of the view, click your duration data metric, then click Sort descending.

  6. Above the data table, make sure that the Tree structure option is selected.

  7. In the data table, click a metric value that is not at the lowest level of the tree structure and select the visualization data set that starts with All.

  8. In the Data Sets section of the page, click Drilldown to enable the drilldown option for your data set.

  9. Above the visualization, select the Sankey chart type.

  10. To the right of the visualization, adjust the settings for your Sankey chart.

    • At the General level, you can change the appearance of the chart, and add or remove all data labels.

    • In the settings level drop-down menu, you can select individual lines to change their colors, and add or remove individual data labels.

As a result, you have created a Sankey chart that displays duration data. You can now add this visualization widget to a dashboard - for more information, see Adding a widget to a dashboard.
