Sending data to BI tools with data shares

This guide explains how to send data from Adverity Data Storage to your BI tools with data shares.

This feature is at the Beta stage. It is only available to Adverity customers who are participating in the Beta testing.

Introduction

A data share allows your BI tools to access data that you have fetched using datastreams in the current workspace and stored in Adverity Data Storage. You can use data shares to send your data to Power BI and Tableau.

Data shares connect to the BI tools using the OData connection.

Prerequisites

Before you complete the procedure in this guide, perform all of the following actions:

Procedure

Creating a data share

To create a new data share with the data you want to send to a BI tool, follow these steps:

  1. Select the workspace you work with in Adverity and then, in the platform navigation menu, click Data Shares.

  2. Click + Create data share.

  3. In Name, enter a name for the data share.

  4. In the Date range drop-down menu, select the date range for which you want to include data in the data share:

    Last x days

Select this option to add data to the data share for a specific amount of time before the current date.

After selecting this option, in the field that appears next to the drop-down menu, enter the number of days before the current date for which to add data.

    Fixed

Select this option to add data to the data share for a fixed date range that does not depend on the current date. The current date is the date on which the data is sent to your BI tool.

After selecting this option, click the date picker on the right and select a date range. To add data for the current date only, in the date picker, select the current date as the start and end of the date range.

    All time

Select this option to add all available data to the data share, from the first to the last date when data is available. This option may increase load times.

  5. In Dimensions, select the dimensions that you want to include in the data share. Select at least one dimension.

  6. (Optional) In Dimensions filters, add dimension filters to configure what data is included in the data share.

For more information about dimension filters, see Adding a dimension filter to a widget. The process described here is the same for data shares.

Applying dimension filters will reduce the amount of data included in the data share.

  7. In Metrics, select the metrics that you want to include in the data share. Select at least one metric.

  8. Click Create.

  9. Copy the credentials of your new data share to set up a connection in your BI tool.

As a result, you have successfully created a new data share.

Copying the data share's credentials

To connect to the created data share from your BI tool, you need to have the credentials of the data share.

You can skip this step if you have copied the data share's credentials during the data share creation.

To copy the credentials of the data share, follow these steps:

  1. Select the workspace you work with in Adverity and then, in the platform navigation menu, click Data Shares.

  2. Find the data share for which you want to copy the credentials.

  3. Click Select an action in the data share's row.

  4. Click View credentials.

  5. Copy each of the credentials separately and paste them to your BI tool when setting up a connection.

As a result, you have copied the data share's credentials to your clipboard.

Setting up an OData connection to the data share from your BI tool

Currently you can send data with data shares to the following tools:

Configuring a scheduled refresh in Power BI

To keep your data up-to-date in Power BI without needing to manually refresh the data, use the scheduled refresh feature in Power BI.

To configure a scheduled refresh in Power BI, follow these steps:

  1. Publish a report using the Power BI desktop version.

  2. Go to your Power BI online version.

  3. Find your dataset.

  4. Configure the refresh settings.

For more information, see the Power BI documentation.
