Files¶
Files are data sources. Upload CSVs and spreadsheets to supplement warehouse data with budgets, targets, campaign plans, and other tabular data that never made it into a database, then query them in Chat alongside your warehouse tables.
Where to find them¶
Files live on the Data page, as a tab beside Sources. Open Data from the workspace navigation and switch to the Files tab.
Prerequisites¶
A storage backend configured for the workspace. Without one the Files tab shows “Storage not configured” and a Configure Storage button instead of the upload control. See Workspaces and storage
Analyst role to upload. Viewers can browse, preview, and download
Uploading a file¶
Open the Files tab
Upload a file
Wait for processing
Mention it in Chat
In detail:
Open Data > Files and click Upload File. The Upload File dialog opens.
Drop a file onto the zone that reads “Drop a file here or browse”, or click it to pick one. The dialog states the accepted formats and the size limit: “CSV, Excel, Parquet, JSON, PDF, TXT, max 50 MB”.
The selected file appears below the zone with its name and size. Remove clears it if you picked the wrong one.
Click Upload. The file joins the table and starts processing. Cancel closes the dialog without uploading.
You can also drag a file straight onto the Files tab without opening the dialog first. A “Drop file to upload” overlay appears, and dropping it opens the upload dialog with the file already selected.
Tip
Give the file a name your team will recognize before you mention it in Chat. Rename is in the row’s actions menu, and the name you set is what the @ mention picker shows.
Limits and formats¶
Limit |
Value |
|---|---|
Maximum file size |
50 MB |
Maximum files per workspace |

Images are accepted alongside tabular and document files. The browse filter in the upload dialog lists the tabular and document formats, so drag an image onto the Files tab to upload it.
What happens after upload¶
Adverity Atlas processes each file in the background: it classifies the file, parses its structure, and generates a summary and a column-level schema. Follow the progress in the Status column.
Status |
Meaning |
|---|---|
Pending |
Uploaded and queued for processing |
Processing |
Being parsed and summarized |
Ready |
Processed, and usable in Chat |
Failed |
Processing did not finish. Open the file to read the error |
Files are also classified into a category:
Category |
What it covers |
|---|---|
Tabular |
Row-and-column data such as CSV, Excel, and Parquet |
Document |
Text-bearing files such as PDF, TXT, Markdown, and SVG |
Image |
PNG, JPEG, and WebP pictures |
Unknown |
Not classified into any of the above |
Browsing and managing files¶
The Files table lists Name, Category, Size, Status, and Uploaded. Two filters sit above it: a status filter (All Statuses, Pending, Processing, Ready, Failed) and a category filter (All Categories, Tabular, Document).
Each row carries an actions menu:
Action |
What it does |
|---|---|
View |
Opens the file detail page |
Rename |
Edits the display name in place |
Download |
Downloads the original file |
Delete |
Removes the file. This cannot be undone |
The file detail page¶
Open a file to see what Adverity Atlas understood from it:
Summary: A generated description of what the file contains
Schema: Every column with its type and a description, plus the row count
Sheets: For multi-sheet spreadsheets, each sheet with its own columns and row count
Image Metadata: For an image, its dimensions and format, plus any embedded attributes
File Details: Status, category, original filename, MIME type, and size
Processing Error: Shown only when the status is Failed, with the reason
The page also carries Reprocess, Download, and Delete.
Previewing the file itself¶
Below the summary, a Preview panel shows the file’s own content, so you can check you uploaded the right thing without downloading it first. What the panel renders depends on the format:
Format |
How it previews |
|---|---|
PNG, JPEG, WebP |
The image itself, inline |
An embedded viewer you can page through |
|
CSV |
Rendered as a table |
Markdown |
Rendered as formatted text |
Plain text, TSV, JSON, SVG |
Rendered as text, exactly as written. An SVG shows its source, not the picture |
Excel, Parquet, and other binary formats |
No content preview. These keep their schema and sheet cards |
Open in new tab beside the panel opens the same preview full size.
A long text file is previewed up to a limit rather than in full, and says so: a CSV names how many of its rows are shown, and a plain-text or JSON file notes that the preview was shortened and points you at the download for the whole thing.
Note
The preview appears once the file reaches Ready. A file still processing, or one that failed, shows its status instead.
Reprocessing¶
Click Reprocess to parse the file again. Use it after a failed run, or when the parsed summary and schema no longer match what you expect.
Warning
Reprocessing regenerates the existing parsed metadata. The confirmation reads “Reprocess this file? Existing parsed metadata will be regenerated.”
Images¶
An image is processed differently from a spreadsheet: there are no columns to parse, so Adverity Atlas records what the picture is instead. Processing reads the dimensions and format, and merges any embedded attributes it finds, EXIF tags, PNG text chunks, and XMP fields, into the Image Metadata card on the file detail page. When an image carries no embedded metadata the card says “No embedded metadata found.”
Note
GPS data is never read from an image, so location tags in a photo are not extracted or stored.
In Chat, an image is handed to the model as the picture itself rather than as text, so you can ask about what it shows: a screenshot of a platform report, a creative you want described, a chart someone sent you. Very large images are the exception; past an inline size limit the answer works from the metadata alone and says so.
Using files in Chat¶
Type @ in a question and pick the file from the suggestions. The file is attached to the
conversation’s context and analyzed alongside your warehouse data in the same answer. This is how a
budget spreadsheet gets compared against actual spend from the warehouse without loading it into a
database first.
Only files that reached Ready carry parsed content, so upload and let processing finish before you mention one.
You can also attach a file to a conversation directly, by dropping it on the conversation or pasting an image, without going through the Files tab first. See Chat.

Roles are cumulative, so the role named is the lowest one that can take the action.
